...as I'm now called to vigil as companion of the Pelican, to give answer to the Crown at Raglan Ffair in August.
This weekend was Winchester Pilgrimage.
The weather was beautiful - after a month of rain in April, the weather gods have consented to give a lovely early English summer for the past few days. (Headed into work on Friday I wondered if a national holiday had been called and I'd not heard - the Tubes were half-full, buses running near empty. It was like half of London looked at the forecast and decided on an impromptu day off.)
So it was beautifully sunny, warm and breezy for the pilgrims' walk to Winchester, with the traditional questions on the route to test the knowledge of the pilgrims on their (English) saints, sins, works of mercy and like details of religious life. At the end, Mistress Mary
maryf proved the most scholarly, and gained a lovely portable scribes desk, by the hand of Matthewe Schwarzdrachen, with Lady Tamara and HE Susannah following her lead and each gaining a gift of light to enhance their studies.
I opted to keep Nesta company in the shade and we sewed together, talking of her plans for the immediate future. She was recognised in the evening court for her skills as an artisan with a Panache (embroidery, and cooking) and her departure to return to her first homeland was marked with a PCS. Thamesreach will miss her.
In the afternoon, I visited in the kitchen, sat with my sewing, and generally did as little as possible, at least til
goncalves came back onto site and we formed a set of four fencers to push each other around. Here I gained a bit of momentum; we did some brisk sparring, 1 on 1, 1 on 2, 1 on 3, then after a break I pushed everyone to fence nonstop, in what proved to be a sort of freeform circle of death, til the church clock chimed the hour (about 10 mins). I had to stop briefly for water in this bout, and was clearly fading at the end, but I did play til the end. I was feeling sorely out of shape on the chime!
To date, I think my best feature as a fencer is persistence rather than skill, I'm keen on scenarios that keep people moving.

aryanhwy held a brief court - receiving a new student herald into the college (Heinrich Polonius), acknowledging Nesta's accomplishments, and bidding her well on her journey...and inviting me to vigil. Ary had scribed a beautiful little writ on parchment, to call me to give an answer at Raglan, which I hope she'll post in public. (Robert suggested I pounce the other side and write an answer!)
And we agreed that Raglan is going to be a very fine event, and a very busy one. :-)
I found myself circled by wellwishers of Thamesreach and of the event. I hadn't realised how many people, along with me, were thinking of an elevation.
exmoor_cat offered a lovely impromptu gift of a bottle of his blackberry wine, which I'm looking forward to trying (sooner the better, as he warned the cork may not stay put for long under pressure).
Approaching the weekend, I felt tired; from work, from family stuff, from general life, and not really feeling up to being 'on', travelling right after work, setting up camp, and being sociable. Just the anticipation of Edith and Thomas' excellent 'garden' feast, and seeing a few people I'd not seen lately, had kept me going - left to my own devices I'd have spent the weekend at home.
It must be a trend: I'd seen Kathryn Hebenstreitz put on vigil at last Double Wars, even as she'd been telling her friends she wanted to go home; I saw my friend Helen
buttongirl called to vigil in her underdress and sandals (and her a clothier). So I feel at least I'm in good company, standing up in court in my sweaty fencing gown and hood.
So: if Raglan did not already have a great appeal to those who know it, know of it, or have heard of it...I urge you to consider attending, for the splendour of the court, and to counsel me as I consider my answer to the Crown.
