Found this guy's summary of the so-called National Health Service - it won't be for much longer (won't be national, won't be about health, and won't be a service).

Very discouraging, and not certain what anyone can do to combat it, short of a revolution...and a meaningful reform of the voting system, which was shot down fairly thoroughly 2 years ago. It would be the only way of evicting the architects of the changes, and possibly pushing back on them.

I think of England's NHS every time I sit down to watch my new favourite show, "Doc Martin", about a curmudgeonly ex-surgeon who takes a post as GP in a small town (population 1000). The thing is like fantasy: Really, a town with one thousand people gets their own GP? I grew up in northern Alberta and the closest GP for many people is an hour (or more) drive away), whether they're in a town or not. Usually the closest GP is shared by about 6-8 towns and villages.

I have a few friends in England right now and have heard nothing but good about the NHS (from the user end, anyway), so I'm sorry to hear it is getting the boot.
