Here's the OpEd I was hoping for
Aug. 11th, 2011 11:53 am These riots reflect a society run on greed and looting
David Cameron has to maintain that the unrest has no cause except criminality – or he and his friends might be held responsible
And a cartoon to go with it
emoni is not feeling sympathetic to looters, she's a good person to make the point about working or being out of work. I wish I agreed it was as simple as, 'just get a job'.
Watching the news last night, the reporter spoke to one of the first people who pleaded guilty to handing stolen goods. He's a black guy, an adult, and has a job (for now, anyway). He lives in Hackney. Before the riots, he says he has been stopped and searched over 20 times by police.
I live in Hackney, have a job, but I am not a black man. I've never been stopped by police, ever.
Assuming for the moment that he's not dealing drugs or fencing stolen goods on the side...if I was treated this way routinely, I certainly wouldn't see the police or the government as being on my side.
