Got a 'hard-drive warning crash imminent' msg on Friday evening.

Thank small gods for geek friends like HG Alaric, who cheerfully squeezed in home visits to our sick laptop, on top of work, and gearing up for this weekend's feast cooking.

So Robert and I are now both recovering our bits and bobs, reinstalling things we usedtahave. I'm mourning the loss of my bookmarks, but honestly, it's like clutter - if you haven't used it in two years, you probably won't - and the site has probably moved/changed anyway.

Happily, I use Yahoo mail, so nothing lost there - just loss of access.

It was very very quiet in the house on the weekend! No Intawebs, no downloads, no radio listen agains... eerie silence!

Sounds like *absolute bliss*, my dear! You & your most dear one could hear each other think across the span of a room, without all that *nasty* electronic interference...Oh! For the good old days...

To avoid losing bookmarks in the future, use Firefox with the foxmarks addon. It saves your bookmarks online, and allows you to sync them amongst a number of computers (or in this case a new computer.) It has saved me on a number of occasions from losing everything.

I'm using del.icio.us for bookmarks - 'cause I use way, way too many different machines and browsers.

Had to have the IT folks rebuild the work machine for the same thing. Mildly amusing Catch-22 - Dell service replaces the disk and installs the OS. But not the drivers - you can download them. The Catch-22 - try downloading your network driver! I used someone else's machine and ye olde USB stick. (Actually ye newe USB stick - I remember in 2004 they were still exotic gadgets.)

Heh, every now and then our 'net goes down at the library, and all the teenage customers wander around looking like little lost sheep. I take great pleasure in cheerfully suggesting they could read a book. :-)
