One solution I've heard people talking about regarding waste was to make the loop part out of scrap fiber. If you want to use every bit of that fine expensive silk, make the end of the loop be, say, cotton then braid to the join of the silk and cotton. This waste bit could be reused.
This would also mean that you could use something a bit thicker for the part where your fingers go which may be easier on the fingers if the tension is high.
