I'm so mad, I might write a letter...
Feb. 15th, 2010 04:24 pmWriting a letter is how comic Rich Hall describes English folks' response to anger: they'll get so angry, they go home and write a letter.
I follow Mary Beard's blog on TimesOnline. She's a classicist based at Cambridge's Newnham college, a womens' only college.
She's posted reporting that King's College London is anticipating having to cut its Palaeography dept entirely, as part of general cuts in Arts and Humanities.
Without the scholars at the heart of studying old manuscripts, you have noone to transcribe and interpret the words of our past, whether its ancient, medieval or early modern.
If you like scribing, studying languages, history or genealogy, I encourage you to write to their principal at King's and pitch for the department.
I have no idea if it makes any difference, but I'd argue that if you've ever read a popular book about calligraphy or history, or done any research on your family tree, you've benefited from someone's grounding in palaeography.
ETA: corrected school: King's College London, not University College London. Thanks zmiya_san.
