Ironic that just as English media is discussing the Queen's speech, at re-opening of Parliament,

and just as The Devil's Whore, an English Civil War drama is on TV, highlighting the clash of ideologies over the role of monarchy in government,

Canada is having its own parliamentary crisis, and the Governor General has opted to suspend Parliament til January, putting off a possible vote of no-confidence that would unseat the minority Conservatives, potentially leading to a coalition gov't of Liberals, NDP and BQ - strange bedfellows indeed.
At least,  that's what I think is happening - I feel so out of touch of Canadian events that this is what I've been able to glean from the CBC over the past couple of days.

Here's the most amusing view, as a CBC Washington correspondent explains it to his US neighbours.
Usually, the most the Canadian GG has to do is cut ribbons and make speeches, run tea parties (one restored the tradition of cricket games in the official residence grounds), get her arms drawn up by the Canadian Heraldic Authority and make sure she is a 'moral leader'  (meaning the last GG and her live-in of 20 years had to quietly get married before she could take office).

Here was the Guardian's take on it - since superceded by events, I think.

Happily, where in some countries there would be blood in the streets, Canadians are protesting around Parliament hill armed only with hot cups of Tim Horton's coffee.

Can't decide if I'm shocked or proud.
