I'm a bit behind tagging and explaining my recent photos.
Today I managed to tag my pics from a stop at Xanten, a Roman garrison town in Germany, just W of the Rhine. We stopped overnight here en route to Niebelungen.
The site is partially reconstructed to give you a sense of the size and organization of the town in period, with grid-layout roads, sewers, temples, circus, and travellers's inn. The other half is still lying under the modern town next to it.
The weather wasn't great, as you can see from the clouds and from everyone's clothes, so we didn't wander as much as we might in good conditions. We did see the wagon exhibit (different types of wheeled carriages), the sample sewers, the temple, the miller and baker's corner, and the inn.
I took a lot of pics at the inn, mainly because I love Roman decor - clean lines, bold colours, lots of repeating patterns, mosaics - there's lots to love. If I ever have the means, I'd love to decorate my house following Roman motifs.
I thought a lot of Enid,
henrytroup's lady, while I was viewing the site. I thought she'd really enjoy it.
